Game fish of a completely different sort
HELD in Melbourne in March this year, the 2006 Commonwealth Games commenced with an opening ceremony focussed on the Yarra River, incorporating 26 pontoons. Each featured a water creature, approximately six metres in length and four metres high, representing the competing nations of the Commonwealth.
Each pontoon incorporated five water features: a 15 metre high candle-style fountain at the head and tail end, a 140 degree vertical central fan-style fountain, and two flanking fan-style side 90 degree display jets positioned at 55 degrees to the vertical.
Each fountain passed 1000 litres of water per minute. To supply this flow, 3.7 kW submersible pumps drew water directly from the river and through a 3mm mesh pump strainer to the jets.
Bürkert Fluid Control Systems’ Type 2000 process valves and Type 6014 pneumatic pilot valve controlled the water flow through the fountains, with Bürkert’s Type 5281 diaphragm solenoid valve installed on the river-water inflow line on each pontoon. Bürkert additionally supplied fittings and accessories for the valve system.
