AMS releases new moisture analysers for natural gas

AMS Instrumentation and Calibration introduces the latest range of
moisture analysers for natural gas from Michell Instruments.

The new OptiPEAK TDL600 uses tuneable diode laser spectroscopy (TDLAS)
technology to deliver class-leading accuracy with a lower detection limit of
less than 1ppmV. TDLAS technology has been in use for some time to measure
moisture in natural gas; however, the OptiPEAK TDL600 is the first of a new
generation of analysers designed to overcome the limitations of older models
currently on the market.

Conventional TDLAS moisture analysers measure the reaction of molecules
to specific frequencies of light, requiring the analyser to be adjusted to
correspond with the changes in the background composition of the gas. To
overcome this problem, Michell’s research department developed the Dynamic
Methane Compensation System (D-MET), which enables the OptiPEAK TDL600 to
measure moisture reliably in natural gas with varying compositions without the
need for manual software correction factors.

Thanks to its new capabilities, the OptiPEAK TDL600 moisture analyser is
already meeting the new parameters dictated by increasing statutory
requirements in many regions for bio-methane to be added to gas distribution
networks.

Michell’s OptiPEAK TDL600 moisture analysers employ the latest
developments in laser spectroscopy to deliver unrivalled accuracy of ±1% of the
reading or 1ppmV, making the latest range the most sensitive instrument in its
class on the market. A new laser lock system automatically monitors the optical
profile of the gas absorption peaks to ensure the laser remains locked to the
correct water absorption signal, maintaining high integrity measurement at all
times.

The non-contact optical measurement technology ensures the OptiPEAK
TDL600 analyser provides a fast response with no wet-up or dry-down times. The sensing
components are protected from aggressive compounds and harmful contamination since
they are not subjected to the gas stream.

The analyser is calibrated traceable to NPL (UK) and NIST (US), and also
has worldwide hazardous area certification, including ATEX, IECEx, cMETus, TC
TR Ex.

Key advantages of the OptiPEAK TDL600 process moisture analysers include
minimum cost of ownership; integrated sampling system and small footprint for
easy retrofitting in existing plant infrastructure; regular field calibration
not required under normal operating conditions due to inherent stability of the
instrument; and assurance of reliable long-term performance with just basic
maintenance and housekeeping.
