2014 Women in Industry Awards

Are there women in your business doing amazing work? Get your nominations in for the 2014 Women in Industry Awards.

The 2014 Women in Industry Awards recognises and rewards the achievements of women working in the industrial sectors, and aims to raise the profile of women within industry, as well as promote excellence.

PACE has teamed up with Australian Mining and Manufacturers’ Monthly to acknowledge women who have achieved success through their invaluable leadership, innovation and commitment to their industries.

Women represent just 11.2 per cent of the engineering labour workforce and National President of Engineers Australia, Dr Marlene Kanga, said more needs to be done to encourage students to take up careers in engineering.

“Australia needs to encourage more young people, boys and girls to study the enabling subjects – science and mathematics – which are essential to study engineering,” she said

“Unfortunately we don’t have enough young people in the pipeline, i.e. studying these subjects at school and considering engineering as a career.”

Women make up around 17 per cent of engineering students at university on average but in some courses there are more than 50 per cent women.

Kanga sees this as a step in the right direction and said businesses with diverse workforces and management are more innovative, produce better products and solutions, are more profitable and have a better bottom line.

“Many companies are beginning to recognise that diversity is an opportunity and can be a competitive advantage,” Kanga said.

“This is probably the best way that change can be achieved.”

Editor-in-chief of Cirrus Media’s industrial publications, Cole Latimer, said the awards program was important in recognising the contributions being made to the changing face of industry.

“Though female participation has risen across all industrial sectors in Australia, companies are still focusing on more innovative attraction and retention strategies to foster this growing talent and support young women working in the sector,” he said.

“Women already working in the sector make up a big part of these support programs.

“They are paving the way for others and achieving great success, and we thinks this needs to be recognised in its own right."

Any women working in the industrial sector can enter the awards, with the event culminating with an awards dinner at the Ivy Ballroom in Sydney on Wednesday the 25th of June.
