Emerson enhances flue gas oxygen analyser to optimise combustion efficiency

A new diagnostics feature in the Rosemount Analytical 6888 in situ flue gas oxygen analyser
from Emerson Process Management is helping to maintain optimum oxygen levels in
flue gases, optimising the combustion efficiency of large boilers and
industrial furnaces.

In an environment of reduced budgets and personnel at plants, the new
6888 enhancements are helping to decrease maintenance requirements and improve
measurement accuracy.

The Rosemount Analytical 6888 flue gas oxygen analysers incorporate a ‘calibration
recommended’ diagnostic with gas-switching solenoids embedded within the probe
electronics, simplifying automatic calibration, and maintaining excellent accuracy.
The embedded diagnostic reduces the cost of providing and installing a separate
solenoid box, as well as the effort to wire and pipe between the probe and
electronics, decreasing man-hour requirements.

Additionally, the calibration recommended diagnostic removes the need to
conduct calibrations on a schedule, eliminating many validations or actual
calibrations. A ‘plugged diffuser/filter’ diagnostic is provided for
applications that have fly ash or other particulate entrained in the flue
gases, which further reduces personnel time and maintenance as well as ensures
accuracy.

Among the enhancements in the 6888 analyser is a variable insertion
option, which permits ideal placement of the probe into the flue gas duct. With
standard length probes from 18” (0.5m) to 12’ (3.65m) in horizontal or vertical
installation, the probe can be adjusted at any time on-line to characterise
stratification across large ducts.

Doug Simmers, combustion analyser worldwide product manager, Emerson
Process Management, Rosemount Analytical observes that the new 6888 has raised
the bar on flue gas analyser operation while maintaining exceptional economy
for customers. Given the tight budgets and time constrained personnel common in
today’s industrial applications, the 6888 provides essential analysis of
combustion efficiency, while significantly reducing maintenance time and cost
of unnecessary calibrations in an affordable and accurate solution. This
improved accuracy not only provides better combustion efficiency, but can also
minimise the production of greenhouse gases such as CO2, and of thermal NOx.

Key benefits of the Rosemount Analytical 6888 flue gas oxygen analysers
include ease of integration and operation; fully field repairable; all active
components replaceable, including the diffuser/filter, sensing cell, heater and
thermocouple, and electronics cards; HART and FOUNDATION fieldbus digital
communications; and optional Smart Wireless THUM adapter for wireless
operation.
