The Santos-owned GLNG site on Curtis Island will soon be
fully self-powered with two of the six new gas turbine generators successfully
fired.
With first gas reaching the gas liquefaction plant in early
March, construction contractor Bechtel has been able to move on full
commissioning of the site power generation systems.
Bechtel global LNG general manager Alasdair Cathcart said
the milestone was a key step in producing first LNG, and the result of a lot of
hard work and coordination.
“2015 is a critical year for our Curtis Island construction
projects with all three sites producing LNG, including start-up of Queensland
Curtis LNG’s second train,” he said.
The gas turbine generators will each be able to produce 12
megawatts of electricity, enough to power 11,000 homes, and run on the same gas
produced by the plant.
Santos vice president downstream GLNG Rod Duke said
activities on site were progressing strongly.
“We introduced gas into our LNG plant for the first time in
early March, marking a key step in the commissioning process that has been
progressing well for several months,” Duke said.
“We’ve commissioned a number of plant subsystems so far this
year, building on the many construction milestones achieved in 2014.
“Santos GLNG is over 90 per cent complete and on track for
first LNG in the second half of 2015.”
