Royal Mail trials 3D printing service

The UK’s
Royal Mail has announced a trial offering 3D printing services through its
London delivery office.

The Telegraph reports that the London-listed, formerly state-owned company has partnered
with iMakr, which will install the printers and offer the use of its
print-on-demand website myminifactory.com through the promotion.

Royal Mail will offer existing CAD designs and act as a bureau service from the centre,
from where printed items can be collected (with the option of being mailed
out). Pre-made designs can also be purchased through the Mail’s site.

“3D printing is an emerging technology that has many applications and
offers an innovative way to create unique or personalised objects,” said Mike
Newnham, the Royal Mail’s chief customer officer.

“It can be prohibitively expensive for consumers or small businesses to
invest in a 3D printer, so we are launching a pilot to gauge interest in 3D
printing to sit alongside Royal Mail’s e-commerce and delivery capability.”

The trial
will be used by the company to gauge consumer interest in the increasingly popular technology.
